Listen to our experts

I agree with foreign minister Upendra Yadav when he says building a high dam over Saptakoshi is something that ought to be decided by a team of experts (Newsfront, Re-building bridges, issue 83). However, I suspect his statement is merely rhetoric, not even remotely linked with he really thinks. I think so because many leaders often say something and do something else. I’d truly appreciate Yadav as a wise leader if he really hands over the task of deciding whether or not to build a high dam to a team of experts. A majority of water resource experts in Nepal think that building a high dam over Saptakoshi may result in catastrophes. Some of them suggest building a small dam over Sunkoshi and diverting water to Kamala river would be the best way of taming the flood as well as a way to generate electricity and irrigate land. India seems to be adamant about the issue of high dam and gives it no priority except as a way to save Bihar from the fury of floods. Nepal government should not overlook the advice of our experts and technicians while striking a deal with India. Hari Basnet Kathmandu
